MATE, Gus C. Age 79 of Hamilton passed away on Friday August 24, 2007 at the Ft. Hamilton Hospice Unit. He was born in Cleveland Ohio the son of the late Gus C. and Anna Toth Mate. He was a graduate of Mentor High School and received his BS and MS degrees from Miami University in education. He married Jean Knapp on January 2, 1951 and she preceded him in death on January 16, 1994. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and received the Navy Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Mate taught school in the Hamilton City Schools for thirty years and enjoyed coaching football, track and field, and golf until retiring in 1987. Mr. Mate also enjoyed being a volunteer at Ft. Hamilton Hospital. He was a member of the Ross Community Church and a life member of the Hamilton Elks. Mr. Mate is survived by his children Gus C. Mate III and his wife Carol of Lake Tahoe, Nevada; Ted Mate and his wife Margaret of Zermatt, Switzerland, and Chris Mate and his wife Paula of Hamilton; brother James Mate and his wife Nancy of Mentor, Ohio; sisters Mrs. Joe (Betty) Gorman of Mentor, Ohio and Mrs. Lyle (Ellen) Hungerford of Mentor, Ohio; five grandchildren Larissa, Bryany, and Callum Mate of Zermatt, Switzerland; Kara and Jacob Mate of Hamilton, Ohio. He is also survived by his long time friend and companion Aileen Wynn and friends Mike, Linda, and Jacque Ulreich. Services will be held on Wednesday August 29, 2007 at 5:00 p.m at The Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Ross Avenue at "D" Street with Pastor Grant M. Montgomery officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 3:30pm until 5:00pm. on Wednesday. The family suggest that memorials be directed to the Ross Community United Methodist Church, 2943 Hamilton Cleves Hwy.
